Fundació Stämpfli

A contemporary art gem waiting to be discovered

Yes, Sitges is Modernisme. It is Santiago Rusiñol and the Cau Ferrat Museum. But Sitges is also contemporary art — and the Fundació Stämpfli. Still relatively unknown to many visitors, this museum is a true hidden gem, home to works by some of the most important artists associated with narrative figuration, pop art and kinetic art.

Thank you, Peter Stämpfli

If you enjoy travelling, you will know that there are places that captivate you. You arrive, and before long you feel a constant emotion. A tingling sensation at the back of your neck. You feel good, the place makes you feel good… and you want to stay. That is exactly what happened to , the Swiss artist who discovered Sitges through his wife, the Catalan Anna Maria. And that discovery changed his life, while also transforming the cultural life of Sitges. The museum that bears his name is undoubtedly his greatest legacy. Opened in 2009, the Fundació Stämpfli is located in the former Mercat del Peix de Sitges (Sitges Fish Market), in Plaça de l’Ajuntament. The building was constructed in the 1950s as a complement to the Modernista Mercat Vell de Sitges (Old Sitges Market). Its artistic collection is made up of works by contemporary artists from the second half of the 20th century who, through friendship and artistic affinity with Peter Stämpfli himself, donated pieces of their work to this remarkable museum.
