Palau Maricel (Maricel Palace)

A palace with a view

Yes, there’s a palace in Sitges. And it is just like something from a storybook: elegant on the outside and spectacular within, with terraces of undulating rooftops and a cloister offering panoramic views over the Mediterranean. Even its name could not be more beautiful: Palau de Maricel (Maricel Palace).

Located in the most beautiful corner of Sitges

Come with us to the Racó de la Calma, in the heart of Sitges’ old town, one of the town’s most beautiful, atmospheric and photographed corners. There, at one end of this small square with incomparable acoustics, stands the Museu del Cau Ferrat (Cau Ferrat Museum). At the other, the spectacular entrance doorway to the Palau de Maricel (Maricel Palace), dating from the 15th century and featuring capitals sculpted by Pere Jou. That doorway opens onto a feast for the senses that should not be missed. This is one of Sitges’ essential landmarks.

The different rooms of the Palau de Maricel

The Palau de Maricel (Maricel Palace) brings together different artistic styles, although Noucentisme — or eclectic art — defines its main character, visible in the spectacular decoration of its principal spaces: the Saló d’Or (Golden Hall), the Saló Blau (Blue Hall), the Sala Capella (Chappel Room), the Sala Vaixells (Ship Room), the terraces — with their wave-shaped rooftops where swallows nest and sing during spring and summer — and the cloister , from which visitors can admire a truly spec-ta-cu-lar panoramic view of the Mediterranean.

The artists and patron behind the Palau de Maricel

A little history and a few important names. The Palau de Maricel was built between 1910 and 1918 by the artist and engineer Miquel Utrillo on commission from the American magnate, collector and philanthropist Charles Deering, who fell in love with Sitges after visiting it (another one, what can we say?). And we should add a third key figure: the sculptor Pere Jou, creator of the capitals on both the façade and interior, recognised as some of the finest examples of Noucentisme of the period.
