The thrill of contact with free-roaming horses
The Parc del Garraf (Garraf Park) is a must-visit if you come to Sitges. It is a natural spectacle that can be enjoyed at any time of year. Furthermore, during your visit you are likely to be moved by the presence of some of the 27 free-roaming horses living in the park, rescued by the Fundació Miranda (Miranda Foundation) from situations of abandonment or abuse. Additionally, this organisation runs various activities specifically aimed at showing how these animals—the only ones that fly without wings—help to transform and protect the environment in which they live. The founder and president of the Fundació Miranda (Miranda Foundation), Rosa Galindo, insists that it is lucky that the horses and the Parc del Garraf (Garraf Park) have found each other. “On the one hand, their presence helps biodiversity, as they contribute to clearing the park’s undergrowth and spreading seeds, and on the other, they are key to fire prevention, as they are the only large herbivores that eat ‘carrizo’ (plume grass), an invasive plant that threatens native species and which, when it grows and dries, becomes a dangerous fuel”. Natural connection with the horses in the Parc del Garraf (Garraf Park)
To enjoy this natural connection with the horses, the Fundació Miranda (Miranda Foundation), as we mentioned, organises various activities which you can check on their website. One of them is called ‘The horses in the park’, where participants follow a route to meet these animals. It is an ideal outing for families, as it consists of a 5-kilometre circular route through one of the main equine grazing areas. Another proposal offered by the Fundació Miranda (Miranda Foundation) is ‘Chi Kung in the territory of the free horses’, where participants begin the activity with a forest bath and then go in search of the horses.
