Sitges’s “small” town festival has very little that is small about it, since boys and girls are the main protagonists of this festival in honour of Santa Tecla, which was declared a Heritage Festival of National Interest in 2016 by the Generalitat de Catalunya. This distinction recognises its high cultural, traditional and symbolic value, particularly highlighting the prominent role of children in passing on the local festive heritage.

The children are in charge

The Festa Major de Santa Tecla (Santa Tecla Town Festival) has an unmissable event: the Matinal Infantil (Children’s Morning Parade), a festival dedicated to the youngest ones but where very big things happen and are paraded: the children go out with their own gegants (giants), capgrossos (big-heads) and bèsties de foc (fire beasts), which they make themselves with their families. The little ones learn the tradition from the adults and continue it with freshness and enthusiasm, a living legacy that grows generation after generation. A festival that combines childhood joy, festive heritage and local warmth, over a few days that promote learning and cultural transmission.
