The Festa de la Verema (Grape Harvest Festival) of Sitges is another unmissable event on our calendar. And if we have to choose a specific experience within this festival, we choose the Concurs de Trepitjadors de Raïm (Grape Treading Contest). Since the first edition was held in 1979, it has become a benchmark event, in which different teams compete in speed, style and skill to press the grapes placed in open barrels with their feet.

Offering of the first must

The Concurs de Trepitjadors de Raïm (Grape Treading Contest), which takes place at the foot of the steps leading up to the Parish of Sant Bartomeu, is surely the most visual and unique event of the third day of the Festa de la Verema (Grape Harvest Festival). That Sunday, the day begins in Plaça del Baluard, right in the old town, with the pressing of the first must and its offering in the church itself. Then, Plaça de la Fragata becomes the wine square, with a showcase of different producers and varieties. The traditional weighing of the Pubilla and the Hereu of Sitges also takes place in the same spot, right after the Concurs de Trepitjadors de Raïm (Grape Treading Contest). The day, held in collaboration with Bodegas Torres, closes with a singing of habaneres and (of course) a tasting of ‘rom cremat’ (burnt rum).
